2 | FREN 418/EURO 485-199 | What does it mean to be French? How has the definition, both legal and cultural, of French evolved over time? What about groups in France that have not or do not fit these definitions? This is what we propose to study by first looking at the evolution of France as a country and a nation and then at groups within it that have historically struggled or are still struggling to be recognized or included. We will more particularly look at regional groups, religious groups, women and immigrants. Students taking the class as FREN 418 will be expected to do some of the readings in French and write their final paper in French about a French topic. Students taking it as EURO 418 will have readings in English and will write final papers in English about France or about issues of national identity and minorities/ “outsiders” in a European country. The class will be conducted in English. Note that MWF will be face to face classes while students are expected to do work on Tuesdays and Thursdays such as contributing to online discussions. |
3 | INTS 484-199 | English Education Internship - Aggies and Japanese university students exchange learning and teaching Japanese and English. Activities include Japanese lessons by Japanese students, English lessons by Aggies, learning about language learning & teaching, conversation "tables", learning intercultural communication & diverse perspectives, and japanese conversations with international students in Japan. |
4 | INTS 489 | This course will focus on the intersections between gender and migration, how these categories, traditionally understood as fixed, have become fluid, changing the way we understand the world. The course will examine some of the most relevant contemporary theoretical contributions in both of these fields, challenging hegemonic and naturalized readings on these two distinct topics to understand how they intermingle in the current globalized world. In order to do this, this course will be presenting different critical approaches (philosophical, anthropological, sociological, …) as well as filmic and literary accounts on the topic. |
