COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Kathleen Mcelroy is a veteran journalist with more than 40 years of experience, including being the director of the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, 20 years at the New York Times, and is a member of the Fighting Texas Aggie class of 1981.
"The university is even bigger, and it's got a much more international standing," Journalism Program Director Kathleen McElroy said. "The idea of being able to start a journalism program at such a thriving university is an amazing opportunity. That I could not pass up."
The goal of the program is to continue to work with existing student media platforms like The Battalion, KAMU, and 12th Man Productions while also exploring new partnerships with other journalism platforms.
"It's a hugely popular major and department for students and teaching skills that are absolutely essential for the modern workforce," College of Arts and Science Dean Jose Luis Bermudez said. "It's really strong it's a really strong group of professors and a really strong group of students."
The revitalized journalism program at TAMU includes a new journalism major that the director believes is going to be fundamental for the next generation of writers, reporters, and news anchors.
"What journalism provides is information that is shared and has been verified," McElroy said. "Journalism is information you can use and can help you make the decisions that we need to run our country and our communities"
