NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH®
National Nutrition Month® is a nutrition education and information campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. This campaign is focused each year in March to focus on the importance of informed nutritional behaviors and physical activity habits. National Nutrition Month® also contains Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day, celebrated on the second Wednesday in March. This day increases awareness of registered dietitian nutritionists as essential providers of food and nutrition services and for their commitment to helping people enjoy healthy lives. Two main behaviors, physical inactivity and unhealthy dietary habits, are the main effects on weight status of young adults that can significantly impact their future health of their adulthood. The United States is experiencing a dramatic increase in obesity rates with an incidence rate of 29% of the 20-39 year old population. Some healthy eating barriers college students have identified are time constraints, unhealthy snacking, convenience of high-calorie foods, stress, high price of healthy foods, and ease of accessibility to junk food (Sogari, et al., 2018). Texas A&M University’s Health Promotion office is promoting National Nutrition Month® with a variety of events addressing these barriers to prevent consequences in the future health of our Aggie student population. Programming includes, but is not limited to, cooking demonstrations for healthy meals, learning how to eat healthy on a budget, a campus food drive for The 12th Can, and a sharing of resources related to nutrition, dietetics, and food insecurity.
