New Website For Former Students Supporting Sustainability At A&M

H.W. "Bill" Clark '74 has created a website for former students supporting sustainability at Texas A&M.
Sustainatm.org is to serve as a communication link for all former students supporting sustainability at Texas A&M.
Clark offered this definition of "Generational Sustainability":
Organizing all economic, political, social, academic and cultural activities to meet the current needs of the human race, while preserving the Planet Earth's ecosystems to meet the needs of future generations.
He said sustainability is about preserving the environment, reducing pollution, renewable energy, solar, wind, tidal energy, sustainable transportation, products from plant oils, recycling, addressing climate change, improving the eco-systems of the oceans, water resourcing, new approaches to food production, and much more. The importance and need for sustainability progress is becoming clearer every day, Clark says, with news reports on climate change, polar ice caps melting, droughts, acid and mercury in the oceans, and a host of other challenges for the human race.
Clark emphasized: "We did not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we are borrowing it from our children and grandchildren. This new organization will help A&M move forward with bold initiatives to help sustainability.
"Texas A&M is a world class research university, and is uniquely positioned to make a global impact. Cutting-edge sustainability efforts are underway in the Colleges of Engineering, Geosciences, Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Engineering Experiment Station, and the Energy institute. These efforts are gold mines of opportunity for more support from former students. Texas A&M is capable of becoming the recognized world leader in sustainability research and application, we just need the will and the commitment."
A second area of opportunity involves transforming the Texas A&M campus into a sustainable operation. This includes renewable energy, sustainable transportation, and an improved recycle and re-use program for the College Station campus. "There is already a Texas A&M Office of Sustainability, and early efforts have begun with bio-fuel vehicles, but there is much more to be accomplished," he said.
Clark is a 1974 chemical engineering graduate, with eight years in the U.S. Army reserves, and recently retired after many years with Dow Chemical Co. He currently provides industrial safety consulting services for shutdown projects. He lives in Friendswood and has two sons in high school. In 2013, he established the first Sustainability Endowment in the Look College of Engineering, to support research efforts. He is currently working on methods to financially support the Texas A&M campus operations in their efforts to move to renewable energy and transportation.
