Texas A&M University is projected to award nearly 10,500 degrees this spring during 15 commencement ceremonies held across Texas and at its branch campus in Doha, Qatar.

“Thousands of hard-working individuals of character will be bringing the Aggie core values into the world, setting an example for others to follow,” said Texas A&M University President Michael K. Young. “The faculty and staff who support student success are model examples of leadership, committed to graduating students who are well-prepared and committed to meet the challenges of our global society. We celebrate our students’ efforts and determination and our extraordinary faculty’s contribution to student success. My sincere congratulations to the Aggie Class of 2018!”

Spring 2018 commencements began on April 27, with the Texas A&M University School of Law presenting 107 juris doctorate and master’s degrees. The College Station-based commencement ceremonies begin tomorrow (May 9) with the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degrees presented by the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. Eight ceremonies featuring 12 colleges and schools will follow in Reed Arena over the weekend.

Commitment to student success

Combined with ceremonies for branch campus and educational sites around Texas for Texas A&M University Galveston Campus, School of Law, College of Medicine, College of Dentistry and Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy, students completing 10,477 degrees in undergraduate, graduate and professional programs, as well as over 500 program certificates will be recognized.

Commencement is a celebration of each student’s accomplishments and every effort is made to ensure safety, security and decorum of a public event befitting their success. Guests are encouraged to refrain from disruptive behaviors which may take away from the special moment. Due to the large anticipated participation, facility occupancy will be monitored closely for safety. Overflow seating will be available across the parking lot from Reed Arena in the AgriLife Center at 556 John Kimbrough Blvd. on the Texas A&M campus.

Supported by growing enrollments, student success initiatives and timely graduation incentives, this spring’s ceremonies will feature the highest number of bachelor’s degrees (7,710), master’s degrees (1,906), professional degrees (635) and doctoral degrees (226) for any one semester in the university’s, as well as state of Texas’, history. This number of degrees also places Texas A&M among the nation’s leaders in the number of students achieving degrees this semester.

Corps commissioning

May ceremonies also will include the commissioning of approximately 142 members of the Corps of Cadets as part of the 2 p.m. Friday (May 11) ceremonies. Additionally, 10 officers will be commissioned and 75 midshipmen of Texas A&M Galveston’s Texas A&M Maritime Academy will receive their officer licenses for the U.S. Merchant Marine during the branch campus’ ceremony. The total number of students receiving commissions is the most since 1984 for a comparable semester, with the newly commissioned officers representing all four branches of the armed forces.

College Station will welcome the Texas A&M University Irma Rangel College of Pharmacy graduates for their ceremony on May 26, marking the first joint ceremony for the Kingsville and Bryan-based programs. Texas A&M University Qatar Campus will mark its 11th graduating class by awarding 80 students with bachelor’s and master’s degrees at ceremonies on May 10 in Doha, Qatar.

University officials point out that the graduation and commissioning figures are based on current filings and related status and can be expected to vary slightly by the time of the ceremonies.
