Description

Under general direction of the Administrative Lieutenant, the Public Relations Coordinator works closely with departmental subject matter experts in the Police Department and the City’s Public Communications department to coordinate public relations and act as one of the primary public relations and marketing liaisons for the department.  The Public Relations Coordinator performs a variety of administrative duties to support the department’s public communication efforts, including but not limited to, disseminating news and information to the general public, city employees and the media regarding departmental programs, planning and coordinating community events, producing social media content, and performing other community-related activities.

Principal Duties

  1. Develop and implement public outreach strategies and campaigns for the Police Department to support ongoing community outreach efforts, promote the goals and positive profession image of the department, expand the department’s collective brand, and foster positive community/police department collaboration and interaction.
  2. Coordinate and manage various public relations community events, especially the Department’s annual signature events. These event planning activities include arranging facilities, inviting, and scheduling internal and external attendees, preparing social media content, coordinating creation of brochures and promotion items through Public Communications, and performing other related public relations logistical activities.
  3. Plan and execute communications outreach and project-based marketing plans, including fostering relationships and contacts to facilitate brand awareness, promotion, and marketing of the department, and developing positive community support.
  4. Assist with the promotion of departmental activities through appropriate platforms in collaboration with the City’s Public Communications team, including but not limited to, internal and external communication materials such as public service announcements, videos, photography, graphics, media releases, social media and website content, informational interview responses and talking points, and other public relations related activities.
  5. Collaborate with internal organization partners, including the City’s Public Communications team, as necessary, to gather and/or provide information; identify strategic communication initiatives, activities, and programs; and formulate communications content in alignment with the department’s public relations mission and goals.
  6. Perform a variety of administrative duties including but not limited to, maintaining mailing and public relations contact databases; and gathering feedback, tracking and following-up on public relations initiatives to ensure optimal messaging and successful execution.
  7. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:     
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field and three (3) years of experience directly related to area of assignment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Class C Texas Driver’s License. Knowledge of communication principles, media, and public relations techniques. Knowledge and use of photographic equipment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Detail oriented and strong organizational skills. Experience with Microsoft products and social media platforms. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. Ability to collaborate and foster positive coalitions with community, professional groups, and organizations. Willingness and ability to work outside of regular business hours, as required. 
Preferred:    
Familiarity with basic graphic design and/or video editing principles and web design a plus.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Additional Criminal Background Screening Required:  In addition to the standard pre-employment criminal background check, individuals receiving a conditional offer for this position shall be subject to a fingerprint-based background screening due to the required access to secured buildings and/or secure data systems.

Candidates must be successful in each phase of the selection process

Candidates may be eliminated or disqualified at any point in the process for failure to meet the criteria set forth by the Police Department

The expected duration of the application process is 60-90 days.  Those successfully completing the selection process will be placed on an eligibility list for 6 months.  After 6 months, the applicant must reapply.  Applicants who fail to successfully complete any portion of the selection process shall be notified in writing by the Human Resources Department.  This notification will include the eligibility date to reapply which will be no sooner than 30 days from the rejection date.
